Casanova Rosé by Corvezzo winery is a sparkling wine from the Veneto region of Italy, made using the ‘Metodo Classico’ or Traditional Method, with like Champagne wines, a secondary fermentation in bottle.
More importantly, this pink bubbly is made from 100% Raboso grapes, an old and traditional Venetian variety most often used in local still blended red wines than in sparklings. A rare opportunity to taste what Raboso grape can deliver when vinified as rosé AND as a bubbly. Tasting Notes This Veneto bubbly comes in an elegant salmon pink color, slightly pale, with shiny gold orange hues making it look attractive and rather glamourous. The nose is dominated by leesy sour dough brioche aromas, as well as intense and lively orange zest and pomegranate. Plenty of spiciness come through, and a distinctive walnut aroma, making the wine smell deep as well as appealing, somewhat like a buttery orange scented apple and pomegranate pie that would be garnished in walnuts too, if you can picture that. Tempting! The palate, straight away, bursts in intense red berries and orange peel flavors. It’s dry with crisp acidity, well balanced by a round body, helped in the acidity-balancing effect by the vibrant fruity notes. Great minerality comes through from the mid-palate on, in the form of slightly granulous phenolics that give a delicate drying astringency, and a salivating finish. There is a standout savory edge to the feel, in addition to the wealth of fruity notes. Let’s not forget we are with a Raboso wine, a traditional Italian grape sometimes considered as rustic. It is sublimated though, here, in a complex, balanced, powerful but overall elegant sparkling wine that seems to have been made with passion and skill with a long ageing on lees to provide depth and layered flavors. Combining refined notes of serious sparkling wines, with less usual characters from a red grape variety, we are certainly here with a rather rare wine, filled with character and tasteful interpretation of this Venetian grape variety heritage.
