Léoville & Langoa Barton

Two properties, one cellar. The Barton family has owned Langoa Barton since 1821 and Leoville Barton since 1826, and both wines are made in the same building by the same people, with the same fermentation and the same barrel regime. The only variable left is the vineyard. That makes this pair unusually useful: the difference you taste between them really is ground, not technique. What people get wrong is assuming Langoa is a second wine. It is a separate classified estate with its own vines.

The range therefore has three levels. La Reserve de Leoville Barton is the second wine, drawn from younger vines and lots not selected for the grand vin, and it drinks early. Langoa is medium-bodied, quicker to open, Saint-Julien in its friendlier register. Leoville Barton is firmer and more tannic, closer to Pauillac in build, and it is the one that genuinely needs ten years.

Paying more here buys structure and time, not immediate pleasure. Now in bottle, it has a very pure bouquet that gains intensity in the glass, laden with blackberry and raspberry coulis scents, cold wet stone, a wonderful mineralité that becomes more conspicuous with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin, a fine line of acidity that lends this precision and nervosité. There is class and sophistication in situ, not a powerful Léoville Barton, but beautifully poised. The wine is renowned for being consistently fairly priced when compared to other Bordeaux classed growths. The fruit becomes more distinguished over the decades gaining secondary characters of cigar box, cedar and leather.

Rated 94 points by Wine Spectator

//This has a solid core of cassis, blueberry confiture and plum sauce flavors, wrapped with warm ganache and licorice snap notes, kept honest by graphite rivets along the finish. This has lots of muscle, but stays lean and long.//

Rated 94 points by James Suckling

//Very aromatic with cherries and blackberries. Hints of flowers. Full body, lightly chewy yet ultra-fine tannins and a fresh finish. Tangy and delicious. Racy. Better in 2021. //

Rated 94 points by Neal Martin - Vinous

//The 2014 Léoville Barton has a crisp, poised bouquet with graphite tinged black fruit, hints of crushed flower and clove, nicely define and gaining definition with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully judged acidity, sophisticated and poised, fanning out with confidence towards the fresh, energetic finish. This is a succinct and beautifully crafted Saint Julien with many years of drinking enjoyment to give. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. //

Rated 94 points by Wine Advocate

//The 2014 Leoville Barton is one of the must-buys of the vintage. This is just a brilliant forerunner to the 2015 and it should represent great value. //

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0606/1893/2422/products/Chateau_Leoville_Barton_St._Julien__50392_eeeb68a4-9f6e-404e-a1df-96a6c2f2c25c.png?v=1702102906
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0606/1893/2422/files/Chateau_Leoville_Barton_St._Julien__59523_4fa96b4c-ed5e-4aad-b9b1-056cf8b4fd28.webp?v=1728379062
la-reserve-de-leoville-barton-2013-st-julien-1x75cl
La Reserve De Leoville Barton 2013, St. Julien (1x75cl)

The 2014 Réserve de Léoville Barton has a little jamminess on the nose (one of the few Left Bank 2014s to demonstrate this.) This may make life a tad predictable but it certainly explains why Langoa-Barton rightly flies out the door year in, year out. Made from almost 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, their 2007 is a particularly good edition with lovely pure plums and damsons on the nose and surprisingly refined, fresh, creamy raspberries and cassis on the palate.
