Bordeaux

The 1855 classification is a price list. Brokers ranked 61 Médoc châteaux for the Paris Exposition Universelle on what each estate's wine had been fetching, and the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac were classified at the same time. Since then the red list has changed once: Mouton Rothschild moved from second growth to first in 1973.

That makes it a precise map of reputation and a rough map of the present. It says nothing about estates outside the Médoc, nothing about who has replanted or changed hands in the century and a half since, and nothing about vintage. Worth knowing exactly what it ranks — then reading the vintage and the estate's recent record alongside it.
