Chateau Cantemerle

Chateau Cantemerle is a fifth growth in the Haut-Medoc, and the thing people get wrong is reading fifth as almost-last. The 1855 classification ranked chateaux by the prices their wines were fetching at the time, in five bands. A fifth growth was already inside a group of sixty properties drawn from thousands, and the ranking has not been meaningfully revised since.

The range divides in two. The grand vin, Cabernet Sauvignon led with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, is stocked here across a long run of vintages from the 2000s to the 2020s. Below it sits Les Allees de Cantemerle, the second wine, from younger vines and softer lots, made to drink earlier. The gap between them is tannin and patience, not intent.

Across the grand vin vintages, the price mostly tracks the reputation of the year. A quieter vintage with ten years on it can be the better bottle to open tonight.
