Chassagne-Montrachet

A village at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, and one of the two communes — with Puligny-Montrachet — that share the Montrachet Grand Cru slope between them. It is the most important source of white Burgundy after Puligny, and unlike its neighbour it also makes a real quantity of red.

The hierarchy

Chassagne shares three Grand Crus with Puligny: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, the last lying wholly within Chassagne. The 1er Cru list is long — Les Caillerets, Morgeot, Les Vergers, Les Chenevottes, Blanchot Dessus and many more — and the gap between the best of them and village level is wide. Village Chassagne, white and red, makes up the bulk.

What to expect

Chassagne Chardonnay is broader and firmer than Puligny — less pure, more textured, and generally cheaper for the equivalent level. It is oaked, though far less heavily than a generation ago. Chassagne rouge is the quiet bargain of the commune: Pinot Noir from famous white ground, priced as an afterthought.

Serving

Whites 11–13°C, in a proper glass. Reds 15–17°C. Village whites drink from two or three years; 1er Cru rewards five or more.
