Château Gazin

Gazin is one of the largest estates in Pomerol and it borders Petrus directly. In 1969 it sold Petrus a parcel of its land, which tells you what the soil is capable of. The assumption to drop is that size means dilution. On the Pomerol plateau, a big holding means the estate owns several different soils, and the wine is defined by which of them it chooses.

That choice is the whole point of L'Hospitalet de Gazin. The clay-and-gravel core near the Petrus boundary goes into the grand vin. The sandier, lighter ground towards the edges of the property, along with younger vines, goes into L'Hospitalet. Same cellar, same hands, different dirt, and the result is a lighter and quicker wine by design.

L'Hospitalet is a weeknight Pomerol, which is a rarer thing than it sounds. Buy the grand vin when the occasion and the cellar both justify it.
