Henriot

Henriot was founded in Reims in 1808 and spent most of two centuries as a Chardonnay-minded house with almost no marketing attached to it. Ownership changed in 2022 and the wines were reworked. The thing people get wrong is assuming an old name means an unchanged wine: the current Brut Souverain is drier and leaner than the bottle many drinkers remember from ten years ago.

The range is built around Chardonnay and divides by how much reserve wine is behind it. Brut Souverain is the house blend, carried by a large stock of older reserves that hold its character steady from harvest to harvest. Blanc de Blancs is all Chardonnay with far less of that safety net. Above them sit the vintage Millesime bottlings and the single-village wines, and then Cuvee Hemera, the prestige blend, made only in years the house thinks are worth it.

The step from house Brut to the vintage wines buys cellar time and a bread-crust, savoury character. It does not buy more fruit. Drinkers who like Champagne bright and citric can reasonably stop early.
