Chateau Kirwan
Kirwan is a third growth in Margaux, and Margaux has a reputation for perfume and delicacy that Kirwan only half fits. The estate carries an unusually high proportion of Merlot for a classified Medoc property, close to a third in most years, which fills out the middle of the wine and makes it drinkable earlier than its neighbours.
What separates the bottles here is vintage, not tier. The cooler, leaner years are lighter and ready now. The warmer years are fuller and hold longer. The oldest bottles are mature wine sold as mature wine, and should be treated as such.
The estate rebuilt its cellar in the 2010s and the wines from that decade are noticeably more precise than what came before. That is where the money is best spent. Beyond it, price differences track vintage reputation and how much stock is left, not how much better the wine tastes on a Thursday.
