Loire

The longest river in France, and the most varied wine region in the country — nearly 1,000 km from the Atlantic to the centre, with almost nothing in common between one end and the other except that everything is made in a cool climate.

West to east

Muscadet, at the river mouth near Nantes: bone-dry and saline. Anjou and Saumur: Chenin Blanc in every register from bone dry to lusciously sweet, plus Cabernet Franc reds and a large volume of sparkling. Touraine: Vouvray and Montlouis for Chenin; Chinon and Bourgueil for Cabernet Franc. Upriver at the eastern end, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé — Sauvignon Blanc on limestone and flint.

What to expect

Cabernet Franc from Chinon is light and savoury and is served cool — one of the few reds that works in a Hong Kong summer. Chenin Blanc from Vouvray is made dry, off-dry and sweet, with the style stated on the label, and holds for decades.

Serving

Whites 9–11°C. Loire reds 14–15°C — lightly chilled, not at room temperature. This single change is what makes Cabernet Franc make sense to most people.
