Louis Latour
Louis Latour is known for white wine, and specifically for Corton-Charlemagne, of which it is the largest owner. The thing people get wrong is the reds. Latour ferments whole bunches and its Pinot Noir comes out paler and more perfumed than the modern norm. Newcomers read that colour as weakness. It is a house style, held to for over a century.
The range runs wider than the Cote d'Or. At the bottom are the Ardeche Chardonnays, made in the southern Rhone from vineyards Latour planted in the 1970s, and priced like the country wines they are. Then Bourgogne and the Maconnais, then Chablis, then the Cote d'Or villages, then premier and grand cru.
The useful step is from generic Bourgogne to a named village or Chablis premier cru. Above Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne you are paying for rarity, small parcels and long ageing potential, not for more flavour on the night you open it.
