Chateau Olivier
Olivier is a moated medieval castle with a vineyard attached, in Leognan, and for a long stretch of the twentieth century it was the estate people used as evidence that a classification can outlive the wine behind it. That is the reputation still attached to the name, and it is now roughly fifteen years out of date. The replanting and the reorganisation of the vineyard happened; the bottles from the 2010s onward are not the bottles that earned the old reputation.
The range divides by colour, and the colours behave differently. The white is Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon, fermented and aged in barrel, and it is the half of the estate that rewards attention: firmer and less obvious than the price suggests. The red is Cabernet and Merlot on gravel, medium-bodied, ready earlier than most classified Bordeaux and priced accordingly.
Within either colour the vintages here sit close together in price. Where the gaps open up, you are buying a year and a level of scarcity, not a step up in the glass.
