pauillac

Pauillac holds three of the five 1855 first growths — Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild — inside a single commune of the Haut-Médoc. That concentration is a large part of why the name carries the price it does.

The soil is deep gravel over clay and limestone, and the commune is Cabernet Sauvignon country. Beyond the first growths, Pauillac holds a long list of classified estates and their second wines, made at the same properties from younger vines or from lots not selected for the grand vin, and released at a fraction of the price. Whether that trade is worth making depends on what you are opening the bottle for.
