Saint Emillion
Saint-Émilion
The best-known appellation of Bordeaux's right bank, on the limestone plateau and clay slopes east of the Dordogne. Where the Médoc is Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint-Émilion is Merlot, usually with Cabernet Franc alongside it.
The classification
Saint-Émilion runs its own classification and revises it roughly every decade — unlike the Médoc's 1855 list, which has barely moved in 170 years. At the top sit the Premiers Grands Crus Classés; below them the Grands Crus Classés; and beneath those a very large number of estates entitled to write Grand Cru on the label without being classified at all. That last point catches buyers out: Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is an appellation, not a ranking.
What to expect
Merlot ripens earlier and gives softer tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, so right-bank Bordeaux is generally rounder young and approachable sooner than left-bank. That does not make it short-lived — the limestone-plateau estates age as long as anything in the Médoc — but it does mean a ten-year-old Saint-Émilion is usually ready while its Pauillac counterpart is not.
Serving
16–18°C, decanted. Unclassified Grand Cru bottles are usually drinking on release; classified estates want five to ten years.
