Tuscany
Tuscany
Sangiovese country. Tuscany runs from the Chianti hills between Florence and Siena south to Montalcino and Montepulciano, and west to the Maremma coast — and the same grape behaves differently in each.
The appellations, in order of ambition
Chianti DOCG is the everyday tier; Chianti Classico is the historic core zone between Florence and Siena, with Riserva and Gran Selezione above it. Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese from a warmer southern hill, held five years before release — the region's benchmark for cellaring. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano sits between the two in price and weight. Then the outliers: Super Tuscans, Bordeaux-variety wines from the coast that were created outside the appellation rules and are now among the most expensive wine Italy makes.
What to expect
Sangiovese is high in acid, firm in tannin and rarely sweet-fruited — the classic descriptors are sour cherry and dried herb rather than jam. It flatters food far more than it flatters a blind tasting. Chianti Classico is where most people should start; Brunello is where you go when you want something to keep.
Serving
16–18°C. Chianti drinks on opening. Brunello and the Super Tuscans want an hour in a decanter, and both hold for a decade or more from a good vintage.
