Vosne-Romanée

The most expensive square kilometre of vineyard on earth. Vosne-Romanée sits in the middle of the Côte de Nuits and holds six Grand Crus in a single unbroken block on the slope above the village.

The Grand Crus

Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are monopoles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, La Romanée and La Grande Rue complete the six. Below them, a 1er Cru list led by Les Suchots, Les Beaux Monts, Les Malconsorts, Aux Brûlées and Cros Parantoux — several of which are more sought after than Grand Cru from lesser communes.

What to expect

Vosne is spoken of in terms of spice and perfume, and it sits between the delicacy of Chambolle and the frame of Gevrey. The practical point for a buyer is different: because the Grand Crus are effectively unobtainable, the honest way into this commune is village Vosne-Romanée from a good grower, which carries a recognisable share of the character at a fraction of the noise. Producer matters more here than anywhere in Burgundy.

Serving

15–17°C, decanted for anything at 1er Cru level or above. Village Vosne drinks from five years; the serious bottles are made to be waited for.
