Léoville & Langoa Barton
Two properties, one cellar. The Barton family has owned Langoa Barton since 1821 and Leoville Barton since 1826, and both wines are made in the same building by the same people, with the same fermentation and the same barrel regime. The only variable left is the vineyard. That makes this pair unusually useful: the difference you taste between them really is ground, not technique. What people get wrong is assuming Langoa is a second wine. It is a separate classified estate with its own vines.
The range therefore has three levels. La Reserve de Leoville Barton is the second wine, drawn from younger vines and lots not selected for the grand vin, and it drinks early. Langoa is medium-bodied, quicker to open, Saint-Julien in its friendlier register. Leoville Barton is firmer and more tannic, closer to Pauillac in build, and it is the one that genuinely needs ten years.
Paying more here buys structure and time, not immediate pleasure. If the bottle is being opened this month, more money can make the evening worse.
