Burgundy

Bourgogne classifies land, not producers. There are 84 AOCs in all: seven regional, 44 village and 33 grand cru. Premier cru is not a separate AOC — a premier cru is a named climat inside a village appellation, which is why a label reads Meursault Premier Cru Les Perrières rather than just Les Perrières.

The consequence people underestimate is that the hierarchy is a map, not a ranking of winemakers. A single grand cru is usually divided among many owners, so the same appellation can arrive in the glass in very different states depending on whose name is under it. In Burgundy, read the grower as carefully as you read the vineyard.
