Clerc Milon
Clerc Milon sits on gravel between Mouton and Lafite, close enough to the estuary that the water moderates the frost and the heat, and it makes a Pauillac with more flesh than the appellation's reputation allows for. The thing people get wrong is the second wine. Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is not a bin of rejects; it comes from designated plots, younger vines, and a barrel selection made after tasting, which is a different exercise from sweeping up leftovers.
So the range divides in two. Pastourelle is built to be drinkable at five to eight years, softer, more Merlot in feel, and it is the sensible bottle for a table of people who are not counting vintages. The grand vin is denser and slower, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a real share of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and it wants a decade.
Paying more stops buying flavour once you are into famous vintages of the grand vin bought young. They are investments in patience, not in dinner.
