d'Armailhac

D'Armailhac is the Pauillac that arrives earlier than the appellation's reputation suggests. It sits under the same ownership as Mouton Rothschild and is made by the same team, but it has an unusually high share of old Cabernet Franc and a lighter, sandier gravel, and both push it towards perfume rather than power. The common mistake is buying it as a junior Mouton and then leaving it in a cupboard for twenty years waiting for something that was never going to happen.

There is no second wine here, so the range divides by vintage rather than by tier. The younger bottles are firmer and still knitting together; the ten to twenty year old vintages are the ones doing what this estate does best, with tannin that has polymerised into something soft and savoury.

Above a certain point you are paying for vintage scores set by how the wine tasted at three years old, which tells you little about how it drinks now. The middle of this range is where the flavour is.
