Gevrey-Chambertin

The largest of the great red villages of the Côte de Nuits, at the northern end of Burgundy's Pinot Noir slope. Gevrey holds nine Grand Crus — more than any other commune in Burgundy — headed by Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.

The hierarchy

Village Gevrey-Chambertin covers a wide area of varying quality, so the producer's name matters more here than in most communes. 1er Cru includes Clos Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers, Combe aux Moines and Lavaux Saint-Jacques — several of which sell for Grand Cru money and are widely held to deserve it. The Grand Crus are Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Charmes, Mazis, Griotte, Chapelle, Latricières, Ruchottes and Mazoyères.

What to expect

Gevrey is the broad-shouldered end of red Burgundy — fuller and firmer than Chambolle or Volnay, and slower to open. That structure is why the village ages as well as it does, and why a young bottle can read as closed rather than as disappointing. Give the good ones time, or give them air.

Serving

15–17°C, cooler than most people pour red. Village level drinks from three or four years; 1er and Grand Cru want longer, and reward a decanter on the day.
