Gruaud-Larose

Gruaud-Larose is the Saint-Julien that behaves like a wine from a firmer appellation. Its vineyard is one large block on gravel further inland than most of its neighbours, with clay underneath, and the wine that comes off it is dense, tannic and slow. The thing people get wrong is opening it too early and concluding it is austere. It is not austere; it is unfinished.

The range runs from Sarget de Gruaud-Larose, the second wine, through recent vintages of the grand vin, to mature bottles going back several decades and, occasionally, much further. Sarget is the drink-now tier. The grand vin from the last fifteen years is still building. The older bottles are the interesting part of this list, because they have done in a French cellar what a Hong Kong flat cannot do, and some carry cosmetic label or capsule damage that has no bearing on the liquid.

Paying more here buys age and rarity. It does not buy more flavour in a young bottle, and a very old bottle is a risk you accept knowingly.
