Italian White Wine

Italy is thought of as a red-wine country, and by volume of attention it is. But it grows more white grape varieties than anywhere in Europe, and the last twenty years have quietly turned several of them from bulk commodities into serious wine.

Where to look

North: Alto Adige and Friuli for Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon and Friulano — cool, alpine, precise. Soave and Lugana around Verona for Garganega and Turbiana. Centre: Verdicchio in the Marche, one of the few Italian whites that ages. Vermentino along the Tuscan and Sardinian coast. South: Fiano, Greco di Tufo and Falanghina in Campania — old varieties, volcanic soil, real weight. Sicily adds Grillo and Carricante from Etna.

What to expect

Italian whites are generally dry, moderate in alcohol and built around acidity rather than fruit, which makes them table wines rather than sipping wines. Very few see much oak.

Serving

10–12°C for most; Fiano, Greco and aged Verdicchio a degree or two warmer. Drink the current release except for Verdicchio and Etna Bianco, which reward a few years.
