Italy
Italy's pyramid reads DOCG, DOC, IGT, and the letter that matters is the G. DOCG adds a garantita step: an appointed tasting panel must approve the wine before bottling, and bottles carry a numbered neck seal. DOC applies the same kind of geographic and production rules without that final check.
IGT sits below both by law and not always by price. It was created in 1992, partly to give a legal home to wines that broke their local rules on purpose — the Tuscan reds built on Cabernet and Merlot that the DOC of the day did not allow. Some of Italy's most expensive bottles are still labelled IGT. The tier tells you which rulebook a wine follows, not where it lands in the glass.
