Joseph Colin
There are several Colins making white Burgundy around Chassagne-Montrachet, and they are not the same producer. Estates in this part of France get divided between children, and each new domaine keeps the family surname while going its own way on picking dates, oak and lees handling. Joseph Colin set up on his own in 2017 with a share of the family vines. Same name on the label, different wine in the glass.
The range follows the map more than the ego. Bourgogne Aligote sits at the base. Saint-Aubin premier cru, which borders Chassagne and Puligny but has never carried their prices, forms the working middle of the list. Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet village wines come next, and Puligny premier cru sits at the top.
This is where extra money stops buying obvious flavour. The jump from a good Saint-Aubin premier cru to a Puligny premier cru buys length, cut and ageing capacity rather than more fruit, and at a young age the cheaper bottle often shows better. Buy up the ladder only if you intend to wait.
The list below is sorted by price, lowest first.
