Laurent-Perrier
Laurent-Perrier built its reputation on Chardonnay-led blends and on rose, and the rose is the thing people get wrong. It is made by maceration — whole black grapes steeped until the juice takes colour — rather than by blending finished red wine into white, which is how most of Champagne does it. That single decision is why the wine tastes of fruit skin instead of tasting of red wine.
The range divides cleanly. La Cuvee is the house Brut: high in Chardonnay, low in dosage, and the reference point for everything else. Above it sit the vintage Brut Millesime and the demi-sec bottlings, which are the same fruit handled for different tables. At the top, Grand Siecle is blended from three vintages rather than declared from one, and Alexandra Rose is the vintage rose.
Past the vintage tier, extra money buys longer cellar time, rarer parcels and heavier packaging. It does not buy more flavour per mouthful. It buys a slower, less fruity kind of wine. If you want the house style at its most recognisable, it lives in the entry Brut.
