Left bank
Left bank means the Médoc and Graves, on the west side of the Gironde. The distinction is geological before it is geographical: gravel deposited by the river drains fast and holds heat, which suits Cabernet Sauvignon, so left bank blends are usually Cabernet-led with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in support. Right bank clay and limestone hold water and stay cooler, which suits Merlot.
That is most of the difference, and it explains the rest. Cabernet ripens later and carries more tannin, so left bank wines are typically firmer when young and slower to open. It does not follow that every one of them needs twenty years — that depends on the estate, the vintage and how the wine was made.
