Marlborough
Marlborough
At the top of New Zealand's South Island, and the reason New Zealand is on most wine lists at all. Marlborough planted its first Sauvignon Blanc in the 1970s and within twenty years had defined what the grape tastes like for most of the world.
What is here
Sauvignon Blanc is the bulk of it — pungent, high in acid, unmistakable. Beyond it, Marlborough makes serious Pinot Noir, particularly from the Southern Valleys, along with Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and a growing number of traditional-method sparkling wines. The sub-regions worth knowing are the Wairau Valley, the original and more herbaceous zone, and the Awatere Valley, cooler, drier and more mineral.
What to expect
Marlborough Sauvignon is a young wine — buy the current vintage and drink it within two years; there is nothing to gain by keeping it. It is also one of the most reliable food whites available in Hong Kong: the acidity handles seafood, salads and anything with coriander, lime or ginger, which covers a lot of what actually gets eaten here.
Serving
Sauvignon Blanc at 8–10°C. Pinot Noir at 14–16°C — Marlborough Pinot is lighter than Central Otago and does not want to be served warm.
