Chateau Montrose
Chateau Montrose is a second growth in Saint-Estephe, the northernmost of the Medoc villages, and the misconception is that its reputation for firmness means the wines are hard. Saint-Estephe has more clay under the gravel than its neighbours to the south. Clay holds water, ripening runs later, and the tannins arrive with more grip. That grip softens with time, which is the entire point of the style.
The range divides three ways. La Dame de Montrose is the second wine, from lots that give earlier. The grand vin runs across vintages spanning several decades. Above and outside both sit large formats and older reconditioned bottles, which are collector items rather than dinner wines.
Within the grand vin, price follows vintage reputation closely. A well-regarded year costs several times a quieter one, and much of that gap is auction demand rather than what is in the glass. A mid-weight vintage with a decade behind it is often the better drink now.
