Nuits-Saint-Georges

The town at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, and the commune that gives the slope its name. Nuits has no Grand Cru — the only major Côte de Nuits village without one — but it has a long and highly regarded list of Premiers Crus.

The hierarchy

The commune divides in two around the town. North, towards Vosne-Romanée, the 1er Crus include Aux Boudots, Aux Murgers and Aux Cras, and the wines lean towards their Vosne neighbours in perfume. South, towards Premeaux, Les Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains and Les Cailles are firmer and more structured — Les Saint-Georges has long been argued to deserve Grand Cru status. Village Nuits-Saint-Georges covers a wide band of varying quality.

What to expect

Nuits is the sturdy end of the Côte de Nuits — darker, more tannic and slower to open than Chambolle, closer in build to Gevrey. Because there is no Grand Cru to inflate the commune's prices, its top 1er Crus are among the better-value serious red Burgundy available.

Serving

15–17°C. Village level from four or five years; the southern 1er Crus want a decade and reward a decanter.
