Chateau Phelan Segur
Phelan Segur owns a long stretch of Saint-Estephe gravel next to two second growths and has never appeared on the 1855 list at all. People assume that means it was judged and found wanting. It was not judged. The estate was assembled by an Irish merchant in the decades around the classification and simply was not in a position to be ranked when the ranking was drawn up, and no mechanism has existed since to add anyone.
The range divides by decade rather than by tier, because there is one wine and the estate has been making it consistently for a long time. Recent vintages are firm, savoury and want either food or a few years. The older bottles from the 1990s have already softened and carry the tertiary character that is the whole point of buying Saint-Estephe rather than something warmer.
The jump from the recent vintages to the 1990s bottles is a jump in age and rarity. It is not a jump in class, and anyone expecting one will feel short-changed.
