Chateau Pontet-Canet
Pontet-Canet sits on the plateau next to Mouton Rothschild and was ranked a fifth growth in 1855, which tells you what a broker thought of its prices before the estate changed hands twice and changed its farming completely. It went organic, then biodynamic, and now ploughs parts of the vineyard with horses and ages some of the wine in clay amphorae.
The misunderstanding is that biodynamics makes a lighter, more delicate wine. It does not. This is dense, tannic, structurally serious Pauillac that wants a decade before it says much.
What separates the vintages here is mostly ripeness and age, not hierarchy. The mid-2010s bottles are classically proportioned and still tight. The 2009 and 2010 are the ripe, heavily reviewed pair and carry a large premium for it. The 1980s and 1990s bottles are mature wine bought as mature wine, with the risk that implies.
Past a point, extra spend here buys scores and scarcity rather than more pleasure at the table. The list below is sorted by price, lowest first.
