Quinta da Sequeira
Quinta da Sequeira
A family quinta in the Douro, the terraced river valley in northern Portugal where Port is made — and, increasingly, where the same grapes are made into dry table wine. Sequeira does both, which is the point of the estate.
The range
Table wines: Sequeira Tinto, Reserva Tinto and Grande Reserva Tinto in red; Reserva Branco and Grande Reserva Branco in white; plus a varietal Rabigato, one of the Douro's own white grapes and rarely bottled on its own. Fortified: Ruby, Tawny, and a 10-year Port.
What to expect
Douro reds are made from the Port grape varieties — Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and their relatives — fermented dry. They are firm, dark and structured rather than soft, and they cost a fraction of the Bordeaux or Barolo they compete with on the table. The whites are the surprise: from high, cool vineyards, dry and unoaked at the Reserva level.
Serving
Reds at 16–18°C, decanted. Whites and Rabigato at 10–12°C. Ruby and Tawny at 14–16°C after the meal; an opened bottle of Tawny keeps for weeks.
