Taittinger
Taittinger is one of the large Reims houses and it is known for Chardonnay — a higher proportion of it in the blend than most of its neighbours use. What people get wrong is treating that as a rule rather than a preference. The entry Brut Reserve is still mostly black grapes; the Chardonnay signature shows up as texture and as a thinner, straighter line through the middle of the wine, not as a number on a spec sheet.
The range moves in fairly clear steps. Brut Reserve is the everyday blend. Above it, Folies de la Marquetterie comes off a single estate, and Prelude is drawn only from grand cru villages. The vintage Brut is one harvest on its own. At the top, Comtes de Champagne is Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs given long ageing, and the Comtes rose is a separate wine rather than a tinted version of it.
The jump to Comtes is a genuine change in kind. The jumps below it are smaller than the price gaps imply, and Prelude and the vintage sit closer together in practice than on paper.
