Château Talbot
Talbot is one of the largest single blocks of vines in the Médoc, sitting in Saint-Julien and held by the same family for a century. The common error is reading the 1855 ranking as a quality order that still holds. Talbot was placed fourth growth and has spent decades making wine that does not behave like a fourth growth, which is exactly why it is worth attention.
Connétable de Talbot exists because the estate is big enough to have real choice. Younger vines and the outer parcels go into it, and it is raised in less new oak. On a vineyard this size that is a genuine selection, not a scraping of the barrel bottom. The estate also makes Caillou Blanc, a dry white from the same address, which surprises people who assume Saint-Julien means red only.
Connétable suits a table this year. The grand vin wants five to ten years before it repays the difference.
