Torres
Familia Torres is the rare thing in wine: a business large enough to appear in supermarkets across three continents that is still owned and run by the family whose name is on the label. Most people know one or two of the cheap bottles and assume that is the whole company. It is not. The family also farms in Priorat, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Rioja and Rias Baixas, and holds separate estates in Chile and California.
The range splits into three clear bands. The Penedes classics, including Vina Sol, Sangre de Toro and Coronas, are made in volume and priced accordingly. Above them sit regional wines made where the grape actually belongs, such as Salmos and Purgatori in Catalonia and Celeste in Ribera del Duero. At the top are the single-vineyard wines, Mas La Plana, Grans Muralles, Milmanda and Mas La Rosa, made in small quantity from named plots.
The single-vineyard bottles need cellar time to justify themselves. Opened young, they are firm and closed, and a mid-range Priorat will give you more pleasure on the night for a fraction of the outlay.
The list below is sorted by price, lowest first.
