Victoria
Victoria
The south-eastern corner of Australia, and the state with the most sub-regions relative to its size — more than twenty, running from the cool hills outside Melbourne to the warm inland plains.
The sub-regions
Yarra Valley, an hour from Melbourne: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the source of much of Australia's traditional-method sparkling. Mornington Peninsula, surrounded by sea on three sides: Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Geelong and Macedon Ranges: cooler still. Heathcote and Bendigo inland: Shiraz on ancient red Cambrian soil. Rutherglen in the north-east: fortified Muscat and Topaque.
What to expect
Victoria is the cool-climate end of Australian wine. Yarra Pinot and Chardonnay are typically 12.5–13.5% alcohol, picked early and made with restraint — a different proposition from warm-region Australian Shiraz, not a lesser or greater one.
Serving
Pinot Noir 14–16°C. Chardonnay 11–13°C. Heathcote Shiraz 16–18°C. Rutherglen Muscat after dinner, lightly chilled; because it is oxidative by design, an opened bottle keeps for months.
