Xiao Pu 小圃釀造

Xiao Pu is a small-scale Chinese producer working in a low-intervention style. Fruit comes from two very different places: the Huailai 懷來 basin north-west of Beijing, and high-altitude vineyards in Gyalthang, north-west Yunnan. Parcels are bottled separately rather than blended into a single house style, which is why the range reads as a series of named and numbered cuvées instead of a fixed list.

What is in the range

The core is the Perdue Pinot Noir series — P1, P2, P3 and J — each from a different parcel and picking, with a magnum of P3. Alongside it sit the Huailai collaborations in Syrah, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Viognier and a Merlot–Cabernet blend; three rosés including a high-altitude Gyalthang field blend; the named cuvées Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, Naked 新衣, Song Song 順順 and The Dark Side 彩虹; the multi-vintage Gathering 聚; and an apple-and-pear cider.

What to expect

These are natural wines: minimal sulphur, native ferments, and bottle-to-bottle variation is part of the exercise. They are not made to imitate Burgundy or the New World, and they are not cellar-first investment bottles. Buy them for what they are — a working record of what Chinese vineyards can do now. Cuvées rotate: what is listed today is what has landed.

Serving

Serve the reds lightly chilled at 14–16°C and the whites at 10–12°C. Most are ready on release; the Perdue bottlings will hold a few years but gain little from long cellaring.
