The Antinori family, with a winemaking legacy spanning over six centuries, acquired the Pian delle Vigne estate in Montalcino in 1995. This acquisition marked their dedicated commitment to producing Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's most revered appellations. Pian delle Vigne is situated southwest of Montalcino, at an elevation of approximately 130 metres above sea level, benefiting from a unique microclimate and diverse soils predominantly composed of clay and limestone, interspersed with galestro and alberese.
The 2018 vintage of Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is crafted exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso, the local biotype of Sangiovese. Following careful selection, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine then matures for over two years in large Slavonian oak casks, known as 'botti', a traditional ageing vessel that imparts subtle complexity without overpowering the varietal character. This is followed by an extended period of bottle ageing in the historic cellars of Pian delle Vigne before release, ensuring optimal integration and development.
The 2018 growing season in Montalcino was characterised by a balanced climate, yielding wines of notable elegance and aromatic precision. This vintage showcases the estate's dedication to expressing the authentic terroir of Montalcino through a wine of structure, depth, and significant ageing potential.
Tasting notes
The 2018 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino presents a luminous ruby red hue, evolving towards a subtle garnet rim. The aromatic profile is complex and layered, revealing initial notes of ripe red cherry, wild berry, and plum, gracefully interwoven with nuances of dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, and a hint of balsamic. As the wine opens, tertiary aromas of leather, forest floor, and subtle spice emerge.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a refined structure. The firm yet integrated tannins provide a backbone, complemented by a vibrant acidity that carries the fruit and savoury elements through a persistent finish. Flavours of sour cherry, redcurrant, and liquorice are prominent, supported by an earthy minerality. This Brunello exhibits excellent balance and a long, elegant persistence, indicating significant potential for further development in bottle.
