Gaja Rossj-Bass represents a cornerstone of Angelo Gaja's pioneering work with international varietals in Piedmont. Sourced from select vineyards within the Langhe DOC, this distinguished white wine is predominantly Chardonnay, complemented by a small proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, a blend meticulously crafted to express both varietal purity and regional nuance. The vineyards, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and calcareous-clay soils, impart a distinctive minerality and aromatic complexity to the fruit. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel, followed by maturation in small oak barriques, a portion of which are new, for approximately 6-8 months. This judicious oak regime, combined with regular bâtonnage, contributes to the wine's textural richness and integrated complexity, without overshadowing its inherent freshness. Rossj-Bass is celebrated for its elegant structure, aromatic depth, and remarkable capacity for graceful evolution in bottle.
Tasting notes
The 2023 Gaja Rossj-Bass presents a luminous straw-yellow hue. On the nose, it offers an intricate bouquet of ripe citrus, white peach, and acacia blossom, underpinned by delicate notes of toasted almond and a hint of vanilla derived from its oak maturation. The palate is vibrant and impeccably balanced, showcasing a crisp acidity that frames a core of concentrated fruit. A creamy texture, a hallmark of its lees contact, leads to a persistent, mineral-driven finish. While approachable in its youth, this vintage promises further complexity with bottle age, revealing greater depth and harmony over time.
