Estate
Margan Family Wines, Hunter Valley — estate-owned vineyards, single-estate production. James Halliday Five Star (top 10%).
Region
The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest commercial wine region, planted in the 1820s. It is humid, and rain at harvest is common — a constraint that has produced a distinctive style rather than a compromised one.
Variety & Style
Hunter reds do not chase concentration. Expect medium body, lower alcohol, red plum, herbs, soft tannin and an earthy undertone — a world away from South Australia's density.
What to Expect
If Merlot means rich, round and easy to you, the Hunter version will read leaner and more structured. That is a regional choice, not a shortcoming.
Serving
16°C. Roast chicken, pork, mushrooms, Chinese braised dishes.
