The Marques De Riscal Gran Reserva 2018 represents a pinnacle of traditional Rioja winemaking from one of the region's most historically significant bodegas. Sourced from older vines within the DOCa Rioja, primarily from the Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta sub-regions, this wine benefits from the distinct clay-limestone soils and a climate influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean forces.
The Gran Reserva classification mandates a minimum of two years in oak barrels and three years in bottle prior to release. Riscal traditionally employs American oak for its characteristic vanilla and spice notes, complementing the Tempranillo-dominant blend, which often includes smaller proportions of Graciano and Mazuelo for added structure and aromatic complexity. The 2018 vintage, following this rigorous ageing protocol, promises a wine of profound depth and evolving tertiary characteristics.
Tasting notes
On the nose, the Marques De Riscal Gran Reserva 2018 presents a complex aromatic profile, revealing layers of dried red fruits, balsamic nuances, and tertiary notes of tobacco leaf, leather, and cedar, elegantly framed by well-integrated vanilla and spice from its American oak maturation. The palate is refined and harmonious, showcasing a medium-bodied structure with polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that underpins the concentrated flavours of stewed cherries, plum, and a subtle earthy minerality. The finish is notably persistent, culminating in a sophisticated interplay of fruit, spice, and savoury undertones, indicative of its extended bottle ageing potential.
