The Mitchell Peppertree Shiraz 2017 hails from the esteemed Clare Valley appellation, a region celebrated for producing some of Australia's most distinctive and age-worthy Shiraz expressions. The Mitchell family, pioneers in the region, are renowned for their commitment to traditional viticulture and winemaking, allowing the unique terroir to shine through.
Clare Valley's elevated vineyards, characterised by significant diurnal temperature shifts and ancient slate and limestone soils, provide an ideal environment for Shiraz. This specific microclimate fosters slow ripening, preserving natural acidity and developing complex flavour profiles. The "Peppertree" designation often points to a particular vineyard block or a style emphasising the grape's inherent spice and peppery notes, a hallmark of premium Clare Valley Shiraz. The 2017 vintage, generally considered cooler, yielded wines of notable elegance, structure, and longevity, reflecting a balanced growing season.
Tasting notes
The 2017 Peppertree Shiraz presents a deep ruby hue, hinting at its concentration. The bouquet is complex and inviting, revealing layers of dark plum, blackberry, and cassis, interwoven with classic Clare Valley notes of black pepper, liquorice, and a subtle hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, showcasing a refined structure with firm yet integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity that carries the fruit and spice through to a persistent finish. The wine's inherent balance and depth suggest excellent cellaring potential, promising further evolution and complexity over the next decade.
