The Maltman, renowned independent bottler, presents a compelling 12-year-old single malt from a clandestine Islay distillery, identified only by its enigmatic 'LPH' designation. This expression offers a unique exploration of Islay's distinctive peated character, elevated by a sophisticated secondary maturation.
Following its initial twelve years of slumber, this spirit underwent a meticulous finishing period in casks previously seasoned with Amarone della Valpolicella. This strategic oak regime imparts a profound layer of complexity, integrating the rich, dried fruit and spice notes characteristic of the Italian red wine with the inherent maritime and phenolic qualities of Islay malt. It is a testament to the art of cask management, designed to harmonise disparate flavour profiles into a cohesive and intriguing whole.
Tasting notes
The nose opens with a captivating interplay of smouldering peat smoke and briny sea spray, swiftly followed by an opulent wave of dried red fruits—cherries, figs, and a hint of prune—intertwined with dark chocolate and exotic spices. The palate is robust yet refined, with the initial phenolic intensity of Islay yielding to a luscious sweetness derived from the Amarone cask. Notes of stewed berries, liquorice, and a touch of leathery complexity emerge, all underpinned by a persistent, warming peat. The finish is long and evolving, a harmonious convergence of sweet fruit, lingering smoke, and a subtle, dry spice.
