Australia and New Zealand cover a wider range of climates than most people expect, and the region a bottle comes from tells you more about it than the country does.
In Australia, the warm inland valleys — Barossa, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek — are where Shiraz and Grenache carry weight and ripeness. The cool sites sit elsewhere: Clare and Eden Valley for dry Riesling, Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Coonawarra for Cabernet on its terra rossa strip, Margaret River for maritime Cabernet and Chardonnay, and the Hunter Valley for its low-alcohol, long-lived Semillon.
New Zealand is narrower and more maritime: Marlborough for Sauvignon Blanc, Central Otago for Pinot Noir at some of the southernmost latitudes in commercial viticulture.
