Batailley
Batailley is the Pauillac that keeps turning up in blind tastings above its price, and the reason is unglamorous: a large single block of vineyard, consistent farming, and no interest in chasing fashion. What people get wrong is treating its Fifth Growth rank as a ceiling. The 1855 list ranked the price a broker could get that year, not the wine a property makes now, and Batailley has spent a long time being underpriced against its neighbours rather than overpriced.
The range splits cleanly. Lions de Batailley is the second wine, drawn from younger vines and the lots that did not make the final blend, and it drinks well inside five years. The grand vin is firmer, more Cabernet-driven, and rewards a decade. Older vintages here have already spent that decade in bottle, which is the part Hong Kong buyers usually cannot do at home.
Paying more within this estate mostly buys age, not intensity. A well-kept twenty-year-old bottle and a recent release are two different wines, not a better and a worse one.
