Chateau Branaire-Ducru
Branaire-Ducru sits in Saint-Julien, and what the property is actually known for is consistency: a run of vintages that behave the same way, from a cellar rebuilt in the 1990s to move wine by gravity rather than pumps. The thing people get wrong is the ranking. Branaire-Ducru is a Fourth Growth, and Fourth Growth is read as fourth best. The 1855 classification sorted chateaux by the prices merchants were paying at the time. It was a market snapshot, not a tasting result, and it has never been revised.
The range divides into the grand vin, the second wine Duluc de Branaire-Ducru made from younger vines and separate plots, and a spread of vintages that runs from recent releases to bottles several decades old. Older bottles are sold on condition as much as on vintage.
Past a point, paying more buys rarity and provenance rather than flavour. A twenty-year-old bottle is a different experience, not a better glass of wine.
The list below is sorted by price, lowest first.
