Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The senior appellation of the southern Rhône, on a plateau of large rounded stones — galets roulés — that hold the day's heat and release it overnight. Thirteen grape varieties are permitted; in practice most wines are led by Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre behind it.

What is here

Reds make up the great majority. A small amount of white Châteauneuf is produced from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc — rare, and worth trying if you find it. There is no cru or classification system: the estate name is the only guide, and the range between the best and the ordinary is wide.

What to expect

Warm-climate, full-bodied and high in alcohol — 14.5% and above is normal, not a fault. These are winter reds and food reds; they do not work as an aperitif. If Châteauneuf has moved beyond your price, Gigondas and Vacqueyras next door use the same grapes at roughly half the money, and Côtes du Rhône Villages below that.

Serving and cellaring

16–18°C, decanted an hour ahead. Most estates are drinking at five to ten years; the serious ones hold for twenty. White Châteauneuf at 11–13°C, and drink it either young or after a decade — it goes through a closed phase in between.
