Craggy Range

Craggy Range is a New Zealand producer, and the thing people get wrong is what that sentence implies. New Zealand has been so successfully marketed as one wine, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, that the rest of the country reads as a footnote. Craggy Range makes very little Sauvignon by comparison. Its centre of gravity is Hawke's Bay on the North Island, and specifically Gimblett Gravels, an old riverbed of stones that holds heat and ripens Syrah and Cabernet in a country most people assume is too cool for either.

The range divides by place, not by a house hierarchy. Hawke's Bay gives the Bordeaux blends and the Syrah. Martinborough, further south and cooler, gives Pinot Noir and the aromatic whites. On top of both sits a small prestige tier, single-vineyard wines from the best blocks, released in small volumes and often in larger formats.

The regional bottles are where the value sits. The prestige wines are better, but the gap in the glass is narrower than the gap on the invoice, and they want years before they show it.
