Dom Perignon

Dom Perignon is a vintage Champagne and nothing else. Every bottle carries a year, and in harvests the house does not rate, it simply does not make the wine. The thing people get wrong is treating it as the top rung of a ladder that starts with cheaper bottles from the same owner. It is not a promotion. It is a separate wine, drawn from its own set of vineyards, released on its own timetable, usually eight or nine years after the harvest.

The range divides three ways. The white vintage is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in roughly equal measure, and it is the house argument in its plainest form. The rose is the same thinking with still red Pinot Noir blended in before bottling, made in far smaller quantity, which is most of why it costs what it costs. Then there are the later releases and the display bottlings, where the wine has spent more years on its lees or arrives in heavier packaging.

Past the rose, the price gap is mostly scarcity, presentation and gift weight rather than more pleasure in the glass. A white vintage in a year that suits you gives you the same house at a fraction of the outlay.
