Domaine René Lequin-Colin

A family domaine based in Santenay, at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune. The holdings run north from there into Chassagne-Montrachet and Pommard, and up to a small parcel of Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru.

Domaine holdings

Whites: Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers, Morgeot and Les Caillerets, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, plus Bourgogne Chardonnay and Bourgogne Aligoté. Reds: Santenay 1er Cru La Comme, Pommard Les Noizons and Bourgogne Pinot Noir. A three-bottle Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru tasting set lets you compare the 1er Cru climats side by side.

What to expect

This is a working Côte de Beaune domaine, not a trophy label. The wines come from the same communes — and in several cases the adjacent rows — as names that sell for several times the price. If you want a Burgundy that will be recognised by name at the table, this is not it. If you want Chassagne 1er Cru you can actually open, it is.

Serving and cellaring

Whites at 11–13°C, reds at 15–17°C. The regional Bourgogne bottlings drink from release; the 1er Cru and Grand Cru whites are normally cellared for several years before opening.
